. Iniciada em 1973, sua carreira no Reino Unido é notável, com várias causas célebres. Em 1978, ele defendeu dois jornalistas acusados de violar segredos oficiais quando entrevistaram um oficial de inteligência. A absolvição dos jornalistas foi uma vitória histórica para a liberdade de imprensa.

. O foco de Robertson se deslocaria para os direitos humanos e a responsabilização dos governos. Na década de 1990, ele defendeu os quatro diretores da fábrica de ferramentas Matrix Churchill acusados de fornecer ilegalmente armas a Saddam Hussein. O julgamento entrou em colapso depois que o juiz rejeitou as tentativas por parte do governo de suprimir documentos-chave. Um inquérito judicial subsequente descobriu que ministros tinham realmente encorajado a venda de armas.
